1. Do one in eight women really get breast cancer?
Yes. Given the average life expectancy for women, on average one in every eight women will get breast cancer.
2. Can men get breast cancer?
Yes. Men do get breast cancer, but much less frequently than women. Less than one in every hundred cases are in men. Still, well over a thousand men get breast cancer every year.
3. Should women start breast cancer screening before age fifty?
No. While the majority of breast cancer cases are discovered through screening there are a couple reasons why women might want to wait until they're fifty. First, a far greater percentage of women get breast cancer after fifty (only 1 in 68 women get breast cancer before 50). Mammograms are not very effective in pre-menopausal women because of the density of their breasts. Consult a physician to find out what is best for you.
4. Are larger breasted women more likely to get breast cancer?
No. The size of a woman's breasts has no correlation with the likelihood she'll get breast cancer. Of course larger breasts may require extra time to examine manually and with mammograms.
5. Should a woman expect to die within five years of being diagnosed with breast cancer?
No. Actually, ninety percent of women survive at least five years after being diagnosed with breast cancer. If the cancer was confined to the breast that five year survival rate goes up to ninety-eight percent.
6. Can wearing a bra cause breast cancer?
No. This is only a rumor. Whether a women wears a bra or not will in no way affect whether she'll get breast cancer.
